Hobby blogging vs business blogging sounds like a tongue twister, doesn’t it?

When I started this blog sometime last year, I did not really know what it was going to be about. All I wanted was to have a  blogging experience. During the same time I also started another blog that was more focused on giving health tips to pregnant women and first time parents.

The difference between these two blogs is clear and one is more focused on reaching out to a specific niche- pregnant women and new parents, while this one is all about sharing my views on various topics that interest me.

The Distinction:Hobby Blogging vs Business Blogging

Like I mentioned earlier, I run two blogs and it is after assessing them I realized the blog posts in each of them have different tone and layout. Reason being one is a business blog while the other a hobby blog. Let me attempt to explain what each involves.

  • The Hobby Blog

In a hobby blog, you will find it is mostly about the blogger’s opinion on topics they have a keen interest in and share with the rest of us from their personal view. These topics are as varied as the author or blogger may want they to be. There are those who are professionals in a specific field and use their blog to share with others with similar interest solutions or tips for solving problems. One such blog is ajagwe.

  • The Business Blog

On the other hand a business blog is more focused. Before starting one,  you have to identify a few things which serve as a guideline to what the blog will be all about. These are :-

  1. Identify your niche – who are you writing for?
  2. Choose a domain name which can be identified with the niche of choice
  3. Give the blog a tag line based on the  niche market
  4. What benefit will the reader get out of your blog
  5. How often do you intend to write posts in your blog – frequency is one thing that will keep bring browsers to you site.

Hobby Blogging vs Business Blogging – Similarities

Regardless which form of blogging you choose, both share certain similar aspects such as: –

  • In both hobby and business blogging, your time will be one asset you will have to dedicate. For a blog to be successful, you have to constantly write blog post to keep the readers going back.
  • You will need to create a good relationship with readers, by writing topics of interest and updated to become a reliable source of information for your readers.
  • In both you can use a domain name of your choice and brand it to suit what you want to share with your clients.

Business blogs can be used as community building tools for businesses either small businesses or corporates. It is an excellent way to share the company’s experience, share their expertise with existing clients and attract additional traffic to the website. And possibly sign on new clients. Some companies have customer service blogs which they use to interact their clients and staff.

A hobby blog can be used as a family meet up where you can share photos, exchange ideas and general have the family members commune there. It makes perfect social tool.

So which ever type of blogging you choose, remember commitment is key.
